Autrefois connues surtout comme des algues sur un rouleau de sushi ou comme de l'\u00e9cume d'\u00e9tang dans une bo\u00eete de Petri, les macroalgues (algues) et les microalgues sont aujourd'hui exploit\u00e9es pour leur richesse en \u00e9l\u00e9ments nutritifs. <strong>polym\u00e8res<\/strong>, <strong>les produits de comblement<\/strong>, et <strong>lipides <\/strong>qui peuvent compl\u00e9ter ou remplacer les plastiques d'origine fossile. Au c\u0153ur de cette \u00e9volution se trouvent des mat\u00e9riaux tels que les <strong>alginate<\/strong>, <strong>carragh\u00e9nane<\/strong>, et <strong>ulvan<\/strong>, Les produits de la biotechnologie sont des polym\u00e8res naturels extraits d'algues marines, ainsi que des lipides et des composants de parois cellulaires r\u00e9colt\u00e9s dans les microalgues. Ces compos\u00e9s se retrouvent dans des sachets comestibles, des rev\u00eatements barri\u00e8res et m\u00eame des mousses de chaussures de type EVA, ce qui ouvre un vaste champ de possibilit\u00e9s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Une \u00e9tude de r\u00e9f\u00e9rence sur les bioplastiques \u00e0 base d'algues met en \u00e9vidence deux strat\u00e9gies fondamentales :<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>M\u00e9lange direct <\/strong>de la biomasse algale avec des polym\u00e8res conventionnels ou des biopolym\u00e8res.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Culture d'algues<\/strong> pour produire des biopolym\u00e8res intracellulaires, tels que les polyhydroxyalcanoates (PHA), une classe de plastiques biod\u00e9gradables synth\u00e9tis\u00e9s par les micro-organismes.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Les deux voies progressent rapidement, des \u00e9tudes r\u00e9centes (2024-2025) montrant des syst\u00e8mes \u00e9volutifs qui alimentent directement en CO\u2082 des cultures d'algues pour produire des plastiques, reliant ainsi efficacement la capture du carbone \u00e0 l'innovation en mati\u00e8re de mat\u00e9riaux.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-vivid-cyan-blue-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-74d7d8375b14c6592a6b480296c70150\"><strong>Des marathons aux march\u00e9s : Applications des algues dans le monde r\u00e9el<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Un exemple qui a fait la une de l'actualit\u00e9 est celui du marathon de Londres 2019, au cours duquel <a href=\"https:\/\/www.notpla.com\/ooho\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Notpla<\/a>\u2019comestible <strong>Pochettes Ooho<\/strong> a remplac\u00e9 des milliers de bouteilles d'eau et de sachets en plastique, offrant aux coureurs une hydratation sans aucun d\u00e9chet d'emballage. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"800\" src=\"https:\/\/impress-he.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Ooho-Water-Pods.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2784\" srcset=\"https:\/\/impress-he.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Ooho-Water-Pods.jpg 640w, https:\/\/impress-he.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Ooho-Water-Pods-240x300.jpg 240w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Le secteur de la chaussure est un autre foyer d'innovation potentiel : les mousses d\u00e9riv\u00e9es d'algues de BLOOM ont \u00e9t\u00e9 int\u00e9gr\u00e9es dans des produits de la cat\u00e9gorie \"chaussures\". <strong>Chaussures Vivobarefoot<\/strong> ainsi que <strong>Semelles IMPACT-ALG de DC Shoes<\/strong>, qui d\u00e9montrent que les mousses biosourc\u00e9es peuvent r\u00e9pondre aux normes de durabilit\u00e9 et de confort, m\u00eame lorsqu'elles sont utilis\u00e9es dans des articles tr\u00e8s us\u00e9s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>La vague d'innovation ne ralentit pas. Des \u00e9tudes r\u00e9centes font \u00e9tat de l'expansion des algues dans :<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>PHAs issus de cultures de microalgues aliment\u00e9es en CO\u2082<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Biocomposites associant algues et polym\u00e8res biod\u00e9gradables<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Strat\u00e9gies de fin de vie qui associent les mat\u00e9riaux aux syst\u00e8mes de compostage, de r\u00e9utilisation ou de recyclage<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mais il y a un hic. En tant que <a href=\"https:\/\/e360.yale.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Yale E360<\/a> des mises en garde, <strong>les bioplastiques ne sont pas automatiquement durables<\/strong>. S'ils sont mal trait\u00e9s, ils peuvent persister dans les d\u00e9charges ou g\u00e9n\u00e9rer du m\u00e9thane, un puissant gaz \u00e0 effet de serre. Il s'agit l\u00e0 d'un cas clair o\u00f9 le succ\u00e8s d\u00e9pend non seulement de la mati\u00e8re premi\u00e8re, mais aussi de l'ensemble de l'infrastructure circulaire. Mais dans le cadre d'un syst\u00e8me circulaire plus large, elles ont d\u00e9j\u00e0 un impact. Associ\u00e9s aux \u00e9nergies renouvelables, aux infrastructures de compostage et \u00e0 une conception r\u00e9fl\u00e9chie des produits, les mat\u00e9riaux \u00e0 base d'algues peuvent remplacer certains des plastiques \u00e0 usage unique les plus probl\u00e9matiques dans des applications r\u00e9elles. Ceci est d'autant plus \u00e9vident que le <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/research-and-innovation.ec.europa.eu\/news\/all-research-and-innovation-news\/explore-four-cordis-results-packs-showcasing-research-projects-contributing-eu-mission-restore-our-2024-04-05_en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dossier de r\u00e9sultats CORDIS 2024 de l'UE<\/a><\/strong>, qui recense des dizaines de projets financ\u00e9s qui transforment ce potentiel \u00e0 l'\u00e9chelle industrielle.
