Innovative approaches for marine and freshwater based ingredients to develop sustainable foods and value chains
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Innovative food from marine and freshwater ecosystems
IMPRESS is centred around the greater EU Bioeconomy and Blue Growth Strategies which strive to support the development of “green” technology to deliver sustainable products and processes, while contributing to the overall health of European aquatic ecosystems.
Green Technology
Sustainable Products
OUR VISION
To provide tangible solutions for the development of marine and freshwater bio-based economies in Europe that take full advantage of the underutilized marine and freshwater low trophic species (LTS).
OUR MISSION
To create, test, upscale and bring to the market new knowledge-intensive products derived from LTS and processing waste waters.

Needs to be addressed
Problems & impress SOLUTIONS
IMPRESS will empower stakeholders to
transition from current practices to more
INNOVATIVE PRODUCTION and
PROCESSING of LTS, using dynamic tools/
demonstrations and multi-actor knowledge
exchange.
High levels of waste across value chains
Valorise side streams and processing waste streams to create zero-waste value chains
Overfishing of some species, underutilisation of others
Develop new food products, and promote underutilised low trophic species
Energy intensive processes
Go beyond the state of the art and deploy energy efficient processing and fractionation techniques
Consumer perception
Promote the positive nutritional, health and environmental benefits of consuming underutilised species and provide capacity building opportunities for all stakeholders

About LTS
What are low trophic species (LTS)?
Low trophic level species form the bottom tiers of the food chain and are typically the producers (e.g. seaweed) or feed primarily on plant material or plankton in marine ecosystems.
