The future of sustainable innovation lies in the blue economy. On September 10, 2025, IMPRESS is proud to co-host the “Developing Novel Blue Biorefineries from Aquatic Resources” hybrid workshop with EU-funded projects CIRCALGAE and FOODIMAR, organised by CEVA (Centre d’Etude et de Valorisation des Algues).
This unique gathering will bring together researchers, innovators, and industry leaders to explore sustainable and circular approaches to valorising aquatic resources, from seaweed and fish waste to high-value bioactive compounds. The aim? To shape the future of blue biorefineries by bridging scientific breakthroughs and industrial applications.

➝ Speaker: Toni Martinez Abad (CSIC)
FOODIMAR – From Bones to Bucks: Unlocking the Value of Marine Side Streams
➝ Speaker: Rachel Durand (SINTEF)
IMPRESS – Advancing Zero-Waste Multi-Product Biorefineries Through Innovative Technologies
➝ Speaker: Brijesh Tiwari (TEAGASC)
Part 2 | Industry Session
A deep dive into how industry actors are scaling these innovations into commercially viable blue biorefineries.
CIRCALGAE – Seaweed Biorefinery: From the Shores to the Shelves
➝ Speaker: Georg Kopplin (Alginor)
FOODIMAR – From Fish Waste to Functional Value: Scaling Marine Biorefineries with Green Technology
➝ Speaker: Emre Yemisken (TETIS)
IMPRESS – Microalgae Biotechnology as a Tool for Blue Biorefineries
➝ Speaker: Maria Alvarez Gil (NEOALGAE)
Commercial Applications – Microalgae as a Source for Fucoxanthin
➝ Speaker: Oran Ayalon (Algalif)
The event will conclude with a live Q&A session, providing an opportunity for cross-sector dialogue, the exchange of ideas, and networking among researchers, businesses, and policy influencers.
Whether you’re attending in person or joining virtually, this workshop offers a valuable opportunity to discover how EU-funded research and industrial innovation are working hand-in-hand to build a more circular, zero-waste future for aquatic resources.
